Secrets In Marriages Can Lead To Divorce — FCT Resident

Some residents in the FCT said on Tuesday that a marriage built on falsehood and secrets would not stand the text of time.

The residents, who gave their opinions to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said that not revealing to a spouse of having a child out of wedlock could destroy the marriage if not well managed.

Miss Maureen Owuebula, a hairdresser and a single mother said that she would not keep such a secret from any man who desired to marry her because he would eventually find out.

“I have lost couple of suitors because of my baby, when they realise that I have a child they stop coming.

“Although, I feel bad in some cases but then I know the man who will truly love me and my child will come.

“I cannot keep that away from any man because I want to get married which is why it is the first thing I say before anything else.

“Marriage is a life time agreement and such a secret is too big to keep away from someone you want to spend the rest of your life with.

“I will not keep such from my partner so I will also not want him to keep such from me.

“The best foundation for any home is honesty and sincerity,’’ she said.

Dr Samuel Chuwa, a medical doctor at Wuse General Hospital said that although children were blessing from God but it would not be fair to hide them from a spouse.

“I might love my wife so much but keeping such secret from me and having a child will not stop me from getting married to her that is if she tells me.

“But if she didn’t tell me and we got married, I can divorce her because she can kill if she could keep such a secret from me.

“The fear of losing me could be her perfect excuse not to tell me but to be honest it is not enough for me,’’ he said.

Chuwa said that for him as a man he would tell her the truth from the beginning and if she loved him enough she would stay.

He added that any man would divorce or chastise a woman for keeping such secret, so the best thing would be to open up “before it is too late’’.

Miss Ijeoma Eze, a journalist said that she would not divorce her husband because he had a child out of wedlock and did not tell her.

“Like every human being I will get angry but not to the point of divorce.

“Marriage is for better for worst, so I should have prepared my mind for the worst before saying I do.

“How am I sure that I will find someone better than him after divorcing him, there is a better way to handle the situation rather than resorting to divorce.

“I could have married him with a child or without a child so long I love him.

“And most men could do far worse things than keeping a secret of having a child. I will just make him understand that I am hurt by his deceit and that’s all,’’ Eze said. (NAN)
