500 kids for basketball clinic

No fewer than 500 kids in Niger State are expected to participate in the eighth edition of the Jomirota National Basketball Clinic, which gets underway in Minna this weekend.

The basketball clinic, which is being organized by Time Out 4Africa Sports and Education Foundation, a United States based non-governmental organisation, will attract kids from age five to 18 years from the 25 local government areas of the state.

Speaking in Minna yesterday, the Founder and Director, of Time-Out-4Africa, Mr. Jonathan Kolo, said that the clinic, which is meant to “catch them young,” will enhance the development of the game in the country.


Mr. Kolo, a U.S.-based retired basketball player, also stated that during the one-week clinic, the kids will be taught various basketball skills, which include, free throw, three pointer and 3×3 competitions.
He disclosed that about 20 basketball coaches from across the country will participate in the event, adding that at the end of the clinic, over 100 basketballs, 2000 tee-shirts, 300 school bags, 500 books and other items will be distributed to the participants.

According to him, the clinic will be held in various locations throughout the state, while the grand finale will take place at the Minna indoor sports complex.

He pointed out that “the purpose of the annual clinic is to encourage children to develop interest in basketball, while also encouraging them to stay in school. This is part our contribution to the development of basketball in Nigeria.”

In addition to the basketball clinic, the Time Out 4Africa Sports and Education Foundation, as part of its education supports programme, will donate school furniture, bags, uniform and sports equipment to some selected schools within Minna, the state capital.

The Time-Out-4Africa Basketball clinic had earlier been held in Kano and Kaduna states, where over 500 kids drawn from both primary and secondary schools participated in the week-long activities.
