How We Were Attacked In Akure -3SC

Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan has revealed that the team was attacked on Match Day 8 of the on-going Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), after it played against Sunshine Stars of Akure and lost 2-0.

The club’s media officer, Jubril Arowolo, in a chat with LEADERSHIP Sports, stated everything was normal until the end of the first half when the club’s general manager, Rasheed Balogun, was accosted in the tunnel.

“I was directly behind him (Balogun) when our former player, Femi Ojo, led some boys to harass him, claiming that the club owes him and he must get his money. He attempted to assault Balogun but the security operatives around prevented him and his cohorts from doing so. On resumption [of the second half] after Balogun had returned to his seat at the V.I.P section, there was an attack on another official, Dan Fulani, who was sitting beside Balogun, a few metres from where the match commissioner, Mark Ndidi, was sitting.

“One of Sunshine’s stewards, identified as Mario, removed his customised tee-shirt, raced towards Dan Fulani, slapped him and wrestled him to the ground. Not done, he attempted to spray him with a liquid substance, claiming that Dan Fulani must have sat on their goals.

“But for the prompt intervention of the people around, especially one Adura Olaleyin, who I later learnt is a boxing coach, it would have been worse. Dan Fulani escaped with slight injuries and lost his wrist watch. After the final whistle, Femi Ojo and scores of other young men swarmed around Balogun, assaulting him and his personal assistant, Adu Akintominiyi. Punches were thrown by one Kunle, dressed in a blue tee-shirt with inscription ‘ODSA’ on it. Balogun had to be rescued and taken away in a white van marked ‘OD92A03,’ in company of the Ondo Football Association chairman, Otunba Dele Ajayi, after it was discovered that the tyres of two cars belonging to 3SC had been deflated,” Arowolo said.

The case stated above is just one of many that has plagued the Nigerian league. The League Management Company (LMC) has read the riot act a number of times and so has the NFF’s disciplinary committee, but the punishments may have to be stricter to deter individuals from taking laws into their hands for any reason.
