Relay team qualify as more Nigerians crash out

Nigeria suffered more Rio 2016 Olympic Games woes after two wrestlers and four track and field event athletes crashed out of their races.

Ese Brume lost in the final of the women’s long jump on Wednesday after jumping 6.81 to place fifth in the event. USA’s Bartoletta Tianna cleared 7.17 to dethrone her compatriot Brittney Reese, who jumped 7.15 to win silver. Reese won the event at the London 2012 Olympics.

Doreen Amata failed to qualify for the next round of the women’s high jump while Stephen Mozia failed to make qualification in the men’s shop put. Divine Oduduru crashed out of the men’s 200m semis, after coming second behind Usain Bolt in their first round heat on Tuesay.

Adekuoroye Odunayo and Blessing Oborodudu failed to reach the medal stages in their women’s wrestling events as after they crashed out in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Oborodudu was beaten by Mongolia’s Soronzombold Battesetseg in their 69kg bout while Adekuoroye was humiliated by Sweden’s Sofia Mattson in the 63kg fight.

However, Nigeria, who have yet to win a medal in the competition, were presented with an opportunity to win one in the women’s 4x100m relay.

Gloria Asumnu, Blessing Okagbare, Jennifer Madu, Agness Osazuwa on Thursday returned with a time of 42.55 to qualify for Saturday’s final.
